Senior Center

The ARC XVI Fort Washington Senior Center is a forum for the social lives of senior citizens and a source of real assistance on critical entitlement, legal, economic and personal issues. The senior center meets the social service, nutritional, educational, and recreational needs of adults aged 60 and over. All activities are conducted in both Spanish and English.

Volunteers serve attractive, nutritious lunches daily starting at 12 noon for a suggested contribution of 75¢. No one is turned away for their inability to donate that amount. Professionally approved menus ensure that the Center members are provided a nutritionally balanced meal with a minimum of one third of the daily required nutritional needs being met.

The Center provides assistance with entitlements and referrals to attorneys, as well as to consultants from various health and mental health programs.

The spirit and body of the members are also nurtured. Exercise, yoga, art therapy, crafts and current events classes are taught weekly. In addition, English as a Second Language is taught at least four time per week during the school year. There is a sing-along in Spanish every Friday, and several trips are offered monthly to various local sites for fun, shopping and education. Health screenings and a broad array of health lectures are provided frequently on topics of interest to all seniors.

Special celebrations, highlighted with dancing, are held for monthly events including holidays, birthday parties and volunteer recognition days.

Volunteer activities are encouraged and opportunities abound. Volunteers participate in telephone reassurance, friendly visiting, meal preparation and serving, calling games and fundraising. Escort services are provided for participants who benefit from this assistance. There is also participation in political awareness and advocacy activities. These are very popular with our members.
